Title: Director of Knowledge Synthesis & Communication
Institute Overview: Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) is a Tanzania based non-governmental organization
with a mission of developing and sustaining health research and resource institute capable of generating
new knowledge and relevant information for public health policy and action. IHI is one of the leading
research outfits in Africa maintaining collaboration with several other research organizations in the
world. Since its inception in 1957 IHI has been known both within and outside of Tanzania for its
contributions in improving public health. For instance, in 2008, the Institute was a recipient of the
prestigious Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation for its contribution to the fight
against malaria through research, training and dissemination of information for policy making.
Position Summary: Director of Knowledge Synthesis & Communication guides the following three
units: Resource Center, Data Analysis Center, and Data Systems Unit with an overarching goal of data
collection, data and policy analysis, as well as general and issue-specific communication to advance IHI’s
mission. The position requires a broad-based skill set that includes outstanding analytical, managerial,
strategic communications, and interpersonal abilities; broad experience in public policy; and a deep
knowledge of public health and economic issues.
Responsibilities:
· Direct the formulation, execution, and management of a data, policy, and analysis framework
necessary for evidence based policy options using the results of our own work and those of
others.
· Create tools and systems that will result in improved metrics to measure policy and program
result.
· Ensure IHI scientists and researchers apply strong data, analysis, and M&E framework from the
conception and implementation of a research program to the reporting of its findings.
· Ensure IHI strategic work contributes to maximizing population health gain by developing data
and analysis systems to study impact and inform decision-making.
· Track (and report internally) current national, international, and global economic, political,
social and other trends important to inform effective execution of IHI strategy.
· Proactively identify and maintain funding opportunities to help increase visibility of IHI research
findings (and those of others) to boost political will for better public health policy and action.
· Develop and implement a broad communication agenda to promote IHI image and create public
awareness of IHI role and its function in the community.
Qualifications:
· Master or PhD in statistics, public policy, economic development or other relevant field, with
applicable experience.
· A minimum of 7 years management experience with significant exposure to national,
international and developing world issues and public health systems.
· Demonstrated success in progressive leadership roles developing and managing policy and
advocacy organizations, programs, or initiatives requiring a combination of strong analytical,
writing and management skills.
· A deep understanding of public health, with a special emphasis on policy and public affairs.
· Demonstrated excellent written/oral communication and customer service skills in complex
organization involving multiple stakeholders and cultures.
· Excellent leadership, diplomacy and inter-personal skills.
· Facilitation skills.
· Track record of working well with others in teams.
