BONGO FLAVA SUPPORTS THE ‘HANG UP ’ CAMPAIGN

In 2010 the Tanzanian government mobilized a national roll out of 14 million treated bednets across the country as part of the national ‘Universal Coverage Campaign’. To support this, in July 2010, the government also launched the national ‘Hang Up’ campaign coordinated by the Tanzanian Red Cross. The ‘Hang Up’ campaign is a behavioural change program that will be educating and encouraging the use of bed nets in nearly 7 million homes across Tanzania. On Sunday 17th April, the Tanzania Red Cross engaged popular Bongo Flava artist and Zinduka goodwill ambassador Fid Q, to support volunteers as they visited over 500,000 households across the Mwanza region. Fid Q took the time out to visit households in his home community, where he spent the day hanging up bednets and speaking to families about the importance of protecting themselves from malaria. Fid Q also took time this weekend to engage with local artists from across the Mwanza region in order to support the ‘Hang Up’ campaign. On Saturday, Fifty artists received training in basic malaria knowledge, as well as training in how to utilise music to deliever effective malaria messaging, conducted by Fid Q himself. Following the ‘Hang Up’ campaign these artists will be empowered to conitnue to motivate the local community to protect themselves from malaria, in an effort to rid this deadly desease from the region. Fid Q also hosted an free concert in Kisesa, just outside of Mwanza town. The newly trained Bongo Flava artists performed at the concert as well as the artist himself, in what was a lively event on his return to his home town. Malaria ambassador Fid Q, hoped that through this music he would speak to the local community and motivate them to hang up their bed nets and protect themselves from malaria. The Malaria Haikubaliki Campaign is led by the Tanzanian Government behind the leadership of President Jakaya Kikwete. It is supported by partners including Malaria No More, Tanzania House of Talent (THT), Johns Hopkins University, Population Services International and United Against Malaria. The goal of the program is to achieve universal bed net coverage and eliminate malaria deaths by urging all Tanzanians to Zinduka! (“Wake up!”) to the threat of malaria and protect themselves against the disease
